after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.
fittingly, chanes’ debut lp comes full circle, finishing the album back in the place it all started and releasing it with long-time supporter house shoes and street corner music.

damon bell arrives on dba with a debut three-track ep that delves deep into the musical influences that shape his sound. best known for his output on fellow oaklander aybees deepblak recordings - where he holds the title chief connoisseur- bell has won ardent admirers both with his string of eps and with last year s debut lp blues for the libyan , in addition to releases on r&s sub-label meda fury. the trio of tracks that make up the ankh boogie ep find bell returning to the dynamic african rhythms of his most floor-friendly work, with live instrumentation layered over an electronic pulse. having had his start as a teenager obsessing over afro-cuban jazz and jazz fusion, his long-standing devotion to learning and adapting the music s polyrhythmic sensibilities in his own music, coupled with the voyages of sound deepblak is known for, result in a unique collage of sounds that at various moments can recall the likes of joe claussell, dj qu and ron trent. where the title track plays with sun-kissed melodies and percussive elements, the b1, aural afrek, goes into darker techno territory, while b2 cut time for change is an organ-led house workout.

having gained huge amounts of radio play for his own productions, as well as the occasional cheeky re-edit, scrimshire brings us two firing reworks of a couple of musical rarities covering latin, soul and disco angles.
his re-work of the 1975 brazilian obscurity tatarue by giovana aims both barrels firmly at the dancefloor, while his extended edit of the morris wilson’s version of rappers delight, entitled bebopper’s delight, thankfully extends the original’s 1’35” length with some typically scrimshire twists and turns along the way.

belgian producer alix depauw is probably best known for his long-running association with shogun audio, where he started out making drum & bass and eventually moved towards halftime and other sounds inspired by soul and r&b. he’s also collaborated on experimental bass music with eprom under the name shades. the first ep on his new 1985 music imprint, elephant dreams, is a four-tracker from depauw himself and reportedly marks a return to his drum & bass roots. it also features two collaborations with skeptical.

nice price deal !!! here comes the second release of orioni records, another compilation of argentinian artists. espen lauritzen makes his way on with >1724<, hardened 909 rhythms together a filtered 303 bassline in his own abstract way results in a banging and effective weapon, creating an hypnotic feeling into the dance-floor. b2 is for farceb with >enki<, smashing broken beats, fm synthesis and sharp 909 hi-hats and beats, using a stronger drum workout within. an impressive masterpiece digging deep into the groove. in the other side, >everything transforms< by pulse one, who presents an aggressive killer track with repetitive hard synth sequences, but it also comes with lot of tweaks on the analog synthesis and different types of pitches, modulations and filters for a mental feeling. closing the album, zedje delivers >restore<, full of obscure rhythm treatments, massive kick drums and shuffled 909 hi-hats and rides, different types of drones and complex analog synthesizers around the modular step sequences get together to bring you this massive peace of a track. classy. keep an eye on this new project, orioni, is here to stay.
farr has a diverse catalogue, with three well-received releases on turbo as well as records with dsnt, leisure system and power vacuum. few producers can claim to have remixed tiga and been remixed by truss.
though farr has an extensive history with bloc., this will be his first outing on the label, a release that incorporates sounds that both bloc and joe are famed for.
the first track, “rpm” features prominently in the bloc festival trailer and is the soundtrack to the 2016 weekender. hissing high hats and an atmospheric baseline quickly develop into an explosive anthem designed to get feet moving. “rolling and thatching” conveys an immediate punch of 90’s acid, followed by techno heavy “workout three” with crunching beats and an unremitting delivery worthy of the berghain dance floor.
